idol-eyes.

when you think of idols, what comes to mind?

i use to associate idols with the old testament, thinking they were the things people from genesis to malachi carved.

the truth is, an idol can be anything: a person, product, or idea.

the dictionary defines an idol as this:
a. an image used as an object of worship.
b. a false god.
2. one that is adored, often blindly or excessively.
3. something visible but without substance.

look at those descriptions. how crazy is it that we adore and worship things/people that are false or without substance and put them before our God, who is true and fulfilling?

so many things in this world fight for our attention.
we see a new gadget and automatically think we need it. we put celebrities on a platform so high that it obstructs our view of the true Famous One. we think that if we just had this bigger house or that job promotion, we'd be happy.

what we idolize with our eyes, we will idolize in our hearts.
idolize sounds a lot like idol-eyes.

"if we are waiting on anything other than God to have a full heart, then we have created an idol. God is no longer our God and no longer the one who fills our soul. He is no longer the One in whom we have placed our hope." -kelly needham.

anything that turns our attention from God is an idol. nothing can satisfy our soul other than the One who created it. the 38th generation iphone isn't going to matter in eternity. money buys superficial, temporary happiness. celebrity fades, but the Famous One has always been here and will always be. He can't be replaced or upgraded every six months. you can't buy His love. He is the great I Am.

my prayer to the Lord is a verse from one of david's beautifully written psalms:

"turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through Your word."
